9:00 AM – Check-In at the Island Air Service Office in Kodiak
The day begins in Kodiak, where guests arrive about an hour before departure. The Island Air team provides hip waders, snacks, and drinks, and offers a short orientation with tips for the day ahead.

10:00 AM – Takeoff from Kodiak
After boarding the small aircraft, the journey begins with a 45-minute scenic flight from Kodiak to Hallo Bay in Katmai National Park. During the flight, our pilot Jerry offered fascinating commentary about the region’s wildlife, geology, and Native Alaskan heritage. He shared insights on Kodiak’s six native land mammals—such as the Kodiak brown bear and river otter—and pointed out mountain ranges, rivers, and remote coastal features visible from the air.
Flying over Kodiak Island and across Shelikof Strait provided breathtaking views that set the tone for the incredible day ahead.
11:00 AM – Arrival in Hallo Bay, Katmai National Park
We landed on the coastline near Hallo Bay, a peaceful stretch of wilderness in the heart of Katmai. Even under a light mist, the scene was striking—fog drifting through spruce trees, bear tracks in the sand, and the vast silence of unspoiled Alaska.
Over the course of the next two and a half hours, we encountered six coastal brown bears. One young bear wandered closer than expected, while a pair was seen engaging in courtship behavior in the distance. Several more were spotted foraging along the shore. We also came across whale bones, small coastal birds, wolf tracks, and other signs of life that speak to the richness of this region.
The walking was steady but comfortable, with frequent stops to observe and photograph wildlife. The boots provided by Island Air made exploring the coastal meadows and muddy terrain easy and safe.

1:30 PM – Break and Return to the Plane
Before returning to the aircraft, there was time to rest and enjoy a quick snack. Guests are welcome to bring their own food, especially if they have dietary preferences, but Island Air Service provides light refreshments to keep energy up throughout the day.
2:30 PM – Back in Kodiak
By mid-afternoon, we returned to Kodiak with full memory cards and unforgettable memories. The flight back gave us one last look at the island’s rugged coastlines and green hills, a reminder of just how special Kodiak, Alaska truly is.
