Kodiak’s History of Fishing 
Fishing has a rich history in Alaska, going all the way back to Alaska’s indigenous Alutiiq people, who relied on subsistence fishing to survive. These fishing skills were passed down through the years, with generation after generation utilizing the rich Alaskan waters they lived along. 

The early 1800s brought Russian fur traders who fished for food – or trade – along their journeys. As the years went on, the fishing industry exploded into what it is today. While today’s Alaskans still fish for survival, much of the area’s fishing is commercial, with canneries and sportfishing abounding.
