A wide variety of outdoor activities are enjoyed year
round by both local residents and visitors. Within a 10 minute
drive you can be: anywhere in the city, down on the beach watching
sea lions, fishing for salmon, watching for whales, driving half way
up Pillar Mountain, and the list goes on and on. If you get out
away from town the possibilities are endless and you can be flying out
in a float plane to watch bears eating salmon one day and catching salmon
until your shoulders are tired the next day.
Topping the list of things to do are wildlife viewing, sight seeing,
hunting, fishing, hiking and camping. Adult and youth sporting activities
include volleyball, basketball, baseball, softball, football
and golf.
Kodiak has a ten lane bowling alley, a 300 seat movie theater and a
teen center with two racquetball courts. There are figure toning salons
and a fitness center. Also, the community residents have access to the
high school swimming pool and school gymnasiums for recreational activities.
There are numerous indoor activities to keep a person busy. The
museums are top
notch, and Kodiak has a very interesting history.
The arts are also well represented. Between
the various non profit organizations there is an
event to attend almost every week.
The U.S. Coast Guard base also offers a ten lane
bowling alley and a 398 seat movie theater. There
is a gymnasium that includes a full size basketball
court, an Olympic size swimming pool and a fitness
work out facility. There are several outdoor basketball
courts, barbecue areas and many parks. Additionally,
there are a sled/ski chalet and a nine-hole golf
course, managed by the Coast Guard, but available
to community residents.
