Climate and Weather

Let’s be honest, few people come to Alaska for the weather.  We are a land full of majestic mountains and waters populated by bears, whales, eagles, and heart-stopping scenery, but our weather, especially in Kodiak, can be challenging.

The island, a rain forest, receives approximately 70 inches of rain and 70 inches of snow per year.  Fog is not uncommon.   The weather seldom stops people from enjoying the outdoors, however.  Most folks who live here just “gear up and go” and visitors are encouraged to do the same.   Your trip will be more enjoyable regardless of the weather if you pack waterproof clothing and boots, fleece for layering, hats and gloves.
