If your transport of choice is a bicycle, Kodiak Island has some great rides for you. Riding on Kodiak Island can be technical and challenging or it can be a beautiful road tour along the highway. No matter where you travel, the lush vegetation combined with dramatic cliff sides make Kodiak unlike any other bicycle bike adventure you’ve known.

A 3.5 mile paved walking/biking path will take you from downtown to Ft. Abercrombie State Park where you can continue your journey on park roads. The whale-watching from Miller Point is spectacular and is a good place to stretch your legs and have a picnic lunch before continuing down the road or returning to town.

Close to Town

Russian Ridge, 7.9 mi RT. This is a popular ride in Kodiak because it’s easy to pick up from town, offers a great deal of variety and can be ridden year-round. The trail includes an easy ride part way up Pillar Mountain and then a fun downhill for about three miles through a Sitka spruce forest. Route finding here can be a bit tricky.

East Pillar Mountain Loop, 5.0 mi or 10.5 mi in combination with Russian Ridge. After a half-hour ride from town, this technical single-track rewards you with amazing views. This ride is for experienced mountain bikers used to big drops.

Swampy Acres, 4.9 mi. This very easy trail connects with the Pillar Mountain trails as well as other technical mountain bike routes. A great little ride for beginning mountain bikers.

Many other mountain bike routes can be found on the island. Additional information can be gathered at the Visitor Information Center including places to rent bicycles during your stay in Kodiak.
